One thing you can do, if you want to get closer to your friends and loved ones, is to ask them which character from Firefly they identify with most closely. This is also how you can drive your friends and loved ones away! But I used to read a lot of Jung, so I believe our archetypal identifications reveal who we truly are.

For example: My best friend, when I told her to watch Firefly, came up to me unsolicited and was like, “OH MY GOD I HAVE FINALLY FOUND A CHARACTER IN FICTION THAT RESEMBLES ME IN EVERY DETAIL. Kaylee! I am Kaylee! KAYLEE IS ME. YOU AGREE, RIGHT?????”

I did.

And when I asked my personal housemate/dudefriend/etc which character he identified with (I was guessing Wash; I had firm bets on Wash, actually, with a little extra money placed on Jayne) his answer was also “Kaylee,” to which I was like, “?????” And also, “!!!!” But then I was like, “oh, right. You’re nice to every single organism on the planet and everyone loves you. I get it!”

And then he asked me which character I identified with, and I was like, “actually, in spite of the whole River essay? It is Mal.”

And he was like, “because he’s heroic?”

And I was like, “no.”

And he was like, “because he’s so crusty and jaded and cantankerous?”

And I was like, “that is a major part of it, but also no.”

And he was like, “why?”

And I was like, “because he is a freelancer. And he is an asshole about his work.

I am some sort of unholy Tam hybrid, though whether I’m more Simon or more River depends on the day.
